O Grande Incêndio de Londres

No ano de 1666 a cidade inglesa de Londres passou por uma grande tragédia que reconfigurou toda a cidade e transformou de vez a arquitetura urbana de Londres. Este incêndio de grandes proporções queimou quase cento e oitenta mil casas, além de edifícios públicos, igrejas e até mesmo a famosa Catedral St. Paul foi destruída no incêndio. A cidade de Londres passou por uma grande reconstrução após esse grande incêndio.

In the year 1666, the English city of London experienced a great tragedy that reconfigured the entire city and transformed London's urban architecture for good. This large-scale fire burned almost one hundred and eighty thousand houses, as well as public buildings, churches and even the famous St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed in the fire. The city of London underwent major reconstruction after that great fire.

Uma grande armadilha

Até o século XVII(17), Londres era uma das cidades mais populosas da Europa, com meio milhão de habitantes. Havia uma muralha que foi construída ainda na época dos antigos romanos, que cercava a cidade junto ao rio Tâmisa, que cruza o lugar. As casas eram de madeira, as ruas eram estreitas, uma típica cidade medieval que cresceu demais, e era também o centro comercial da cidade. Londres estava totalmente vulnerável a um incêndio se este acontecesse.

Until the 17th century (17), London was one of the most populous cities in Europe, with half a million inhabitants. No centro de Londres existia diversas atividades comerciais que tinham risco de incêndio, como as forjas e atividades que precisem de um forno, como a fabricação de pão por exemplo. Ao longo do rio Tâmisa havia vários depósitos de pólvora e combustíveis.

In this area surrounded by a wall lived about eighty thousand people, it was the poorest who inhabited this part of the city. The richest lived in the suburbs of London. In central London there were several commercial activities that were at risk of fire, such as forging and activities that need an oven, like making bread for example. Along the Thames River there were several deposits of gunpowder and fuel.

Devido à quase recente Guerra Civil na época, um material altamente inflamável conhecido como pólvora negra era armazenada ao longo das margens do rio Tâmisa. Fonte de água em caso de incêndio, estes depósitos teriam um grande papel na gravidade do incêndio. Até mesmo a ponte que conectava o lado sul da cidade era lotada de casas, diversas pessoas moravam nesta ponte.

Due to the almost recent Civil War at the time, a highly flammable material known as black powder was stored along the banks of the River Thames. A source of water in the event of a fire, these deposits would play a large role in the severity of the fire. Even the bridge that connected the south side of the city was crowded with houses, several people lived on this bridge.

Havia uma espécie de construção medieval chamada de jettying, em que os andares acima são construídos além das dimensões do andar abaixo, era uma forma de ganhar espaço interior sem obstruir a rua. Esses edifícios as vezes possuíam seis ou sete andares. O rei Carlos II havia proibido a construção desses jettyings no ano de 1661.

There was a kind of medieval construction called jettying, in which the floors above are built beyond the dimensions of the floor below, it was a way of gaining interior space without obstructing the street. Porém a cidade de Londres e governo monárquico mantinham uma certa rixa graças à Guerra Civil que tinha acontecido uns anos antes, então as ordens do rei Carlos II não eram levadas tão a sério. No ano de 1632 houve um incêndio que mostrou o quanto Londres estava vulnerável.

A princípio Londres tinha um plano contra incêndios, pois devido as casas de madeira, fornos e lareiras, os incêndios não eram raros na cidade, mas o fogo era sempre controlado pelos trainband, uma milícia local. Por lei, as igrejas deveriam guardar em suas torres equipamentos de combate ao fogo, como escadas, baldes feitos em couro e firehooks (ganchos que causavam a demolição do lugar em chamas).

At first London had a fire plan, because due to the wooden houses, ovens and fireplaces, fires were not rare in the city, but the fire was always controlled by the trainband, a local militia. By law, churches should keep fire-fighting equipment in their towers, such as stairs, buckets made of leather and firehooks (hooks that caused the burning place to be demolished).

O incêndio (The Fire)

Na madrugada de domingo, 2 de setembro de 1666, um incêndio começou na rua Pudding Lane, numa padaria, os vizinhos tentaram apagar o fogo e cerca de uma hora depois veio ajuda dos policiais da paróquia local, a princípio eles quiseram demolir as casas ao redor das chamas para evitar a propagação do fogo.

In the early hours of Sunday, September 2, 1666, a fire broke out on Pudding Lane, in a bakery, the neighbors tried to put out the fire, and about an hour later, help came from the local parish police, at first they wanted to demolish the houses. around the flames to prevent the spread of fire.

Mas como a pandemia de COVID-19 já mostrou, o sacrifício de algumas coisas em benefício do coletivo(como o lockdown, por exemplo) é uma decisão bem difícil das pessoas aceitarem. Os chefes de família que moravam nestas casas que seriam demolidas protestaram e então tiveram que chamar o prefeito, Thomas Bloodworth, para conseguir a permissão pra demolição, enquanto isso, o fogo ia se espalhando, as chamas não esperam ninguém.

Meanwhile, people who lived next to the fire that was going on, started to leave their homes carrying valuables through the narrow streets. This caused a great deal of congestion that hindered the firefighters' work a lot.

Na segunda feira o fogo chegou ao centro financeiro e destruiu casas de pessoas ricas, como um banqueiro que tentava salvar seu ouro das chamas. On Monday the fire reached the financial center and destroyed homes of wealthy people, like a banker trying to save his gold from the flames. The wind carried sparks and several small fires started away from the "main" fire. People tried to loot the homes of the rich, the streets were in chaos.

Na terça feira foi o dia mais destrutivo deste grande incêndio que havia começado na madrugada de domingo. O fogo chegou até a Catedral St. Paul, que muitos consideravam um lugar seguro.

Tuesday was the most destructive day of this great fire that had started in the early hours of Sunday. The fire reached St. Paul's Cathedral, which many considered a safe place.

Quando o fogo ameaçou chegar na Torre de Londres, os oficiais da torre decidiram por conta própria destruir os edifícios ao redor do incêndio para conter o fogo, funcionou, o incêndio foi contido pelo lado da Torre de Londres.

Na quarta feira, a explosão de edifícios ao redor do incêndio feito pelos oficiais da torre havia conseguido conter e acabar com o grande incêndio.

On Wednesday, the explosion of buildings around the fire by tower officials had managed to contain and put an end to the big fire.

A cidade ficou destruída, e ainda com pequenos focos de incêndio. O último destes focos foi apagado somente dois meses após o início do incêndio.

The city was destroyed, and still with small fires. The last of these outbreaks was extinguished only two months after the fire started.

Podemos aprender uma grande lição com esta catástrofe, a solução de demolir as casas ao redor apontada por especialistas, no caso os bombeiros, teriam impedido esse incêndio em grandes proporções e no final esta solução teve que ser colocada em prática do mesmo jeito.

We can learn a great lesson from this catastrophe, the solution to demolish the houses around pointed out by specialists, in this case the firefighters, would have prevented this fire in great proportions and in the end this solution had to be put into practice in the same way.
